The Revitalising the Heart of Chesterfield project includes plans to revamp the town’s historic outdoor Market Place.
A new layout has been confirmed for Market Square – making it easier for shoppers to explore, with modernised stalls complemented with vibrant new canopies in heritage colours and the historic Town Pump a unique feature.
The revitalised outdoor market will include better lighting and power, paving repairs and flexible trading areas. In summer 2021, Chesterfield Borough Council asked residents, market traders and local businesses to share their views and help shape the future of Chesterfield Market as part of a public consultation.
The multi-million pound Revitalising the Heart of Chesterfield project includes a range of improvement works to transform the look, feel and flow of the town’s key public spaces. The works are due to start on 1 July 2024 and will take eighteen months to complete.
The proposals have also been developed with regard for the Conservation Area including giving greater prominence to the Market Hall and the town pump, which is currently obscured, by opening up the public space in these areas.
The project will support the creation of 66 jobs and safeguard 80 jobs on the outdoor market.
The Revitalising the Heart of Chesterfield project is led by Chesterfield Borough Council with funding from the Government’s Levelling Up Fund.
Now open for business, the prestigious Northern Gateway Enterprise Centre includes 32 office suites (26 to 120 square metres) and offers a multitude of features that will appeal to any company looking to become established in Chesterfield.
Chesterfield Elder Way (Former Co-op Store)
Occupying a pivotal site in the town centre, Elderway is a landmark mixed use scheme, breathing life into the town’s famous 1930s, Mock-Tudor former Co-op department store.
Chesterfield Market has become one of the largest open air markets in the area.
